What is linguistic analysis?
Linguistics is the scientific study of language. Since it covers a huge field, there are many sub-disciplines.
At DRCC we use Applied Linguistics to describe and analyse web content and other written communications. By comparing our findings with best practice and detailed information about your target audiences, we:
- report on how likely you are to meet your objectives
- provide illustrated examples of strengths and weaknesses
- highlight any problem areas to cover in editorial style guides and training
In practice
We focus methodically on the structure and style of written material, whether online, printed or scripted. This includes:
- how different sections have been presented
- techniques for engaging the audience
- paragraph structure, sentence structure, choice of words – and readability statistics
- stylistic tendencies, such as abstract language and levels of formality / informality
- tone of voice, intended or unintended, and brand language
- many other things
Qualifications
We have team members with exceptional experience and formal qualifications in linguistics.
Managing Director Diana Railton has a Masters degree in Applied Linguistics, a postgraduate diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, and over 25 years' related experience in written communications.
She was also a Research Fellow in Communication at the Language Studies Unit of Aston University.
'As a writer and editor, I used to work largely through intuition,' says Diana. 'Applied Linguistics has given me a much stronger editorial framework to share with our clients.'
