Advanced web writing

This very practical course is about you. It will focus on what your role is, the type of web writing you're doing and how you're getting on.

It is a unique opportunity for more experienced web writers and editors to develop and review their skills under Diana Railton's guidance.

The format of each workshop will evolve to meet the individual needs of the people attending. It is limited to six people to ensure plenty of one-to-one attention and group work.

Before the course you will be asked to complete a questionnaire to tell us about yourself and what aspects of web writing you wish to focus on.

Please send in advance samples of your own writing or writing that is typical of your website or intranet. Diana will study this carefully and talk over it with you, while highlighting areas to benefit the group as a whole.

Strong web writing often stems from editorial analysis, and awareness of good and bad practice. There will be plenty of exercises on this and time for you to work on your own material.

The course will include

  • what makes web writing different
  • strategy, audiences, objectives and outcomes
  • developing personas that work
  • inspiring readers to do what you want them to
  • writing one to one - relationship writing
  • defining the right tone of voice / verbal branding
  • adapting material written for other channels

We'll also look at

  • persuasion architecture
  • linguistic techniques for strong web writing
  • ways of reducing cognitive load
  • results of eyetracking surveys
  • writing for search engines
  • style guides and editorial checklists
  • readability testing
  • metrics
